8-year-old boy receives new hands

Zion Harvey is the first child in the world to receive a double-hand and forearm transplant. A severe infection forced doctors to amputate both of Harvey’s hands and feet several years ago. He also received a kidney transplant.

After receiving a first-of-its-kind surgery to restore both his hands, an 8-year-old boy in Philadelphia just wants to climb monkey bars and toss the football.
"He goes through things most adults couldn’t fathom," said Harvey’s mother, Pattie Ray. "And he endures them with a smile, and he is happy."
Dr. L. Scott Levin led the surgical team that performed the ground-breaking procedure at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia earlier this month. It took a team of 40 doctors, nurses and other medical personnel and more than 10 hours to perform the operation.
The surgeons connected bone, blood vessels, nerves, muscles, tendons and skin.
